Water Treatment

Water Treatment Plant EntranceLake Brownwood and Lake Brownwood Dam are owned and operated by Brown County Water Improvement District No. 1. Construction of the lake began in 1930 and was completed in 1933. The lake is located at the confluence of Pecan Bayou and Jim Ned Creek in Brown County, eight miles north of Brownwood, TX (See figure 1). Drainage area of the lake is approximately 1,535 square miles. When the lake is full, 1425.0 feet above sea level, it has a shoreline of approximately 68 miles and is 13.5 miles long. The widest part of the lake is approximately one and one half miles. The lake will contain approximately 114,000 acre-feet of water or 37,146,900,000 gallons when full.

The 1,535 square miles of drainage area of the lake is predominately agriculture and there is no treated municipal or industrial waste that discharges into the lake.

The lake has one state park; numerous boat docks and is used for a variety of outdoor activities such as boating, fishing, skiing, swimming, and camping.

The East Plant blueprints were printed in 1933 and had a capacity of 4.3 million gallons per day, in 1943 the capacity was increased to 10 million gallons per day. The final expansion (1970's) brought the capacity up to 12 million gallons per day.

The West Plant was built and put on line in 1986 with a capacity or 10 million gallons per day.

In 2003 the East Plant was reclassified as a 4 million gallon per day plant.

The treatment plant employs seven operators certified by the TEXAS COMMISSION ON ENVIRONMENTAL QUALITY. Three hold a class "A" water license, one holds a class "B" surface water license and three have a class "C" surface water license. The treatment plant also employs one Building and Grounds Technologist.

The treatment plant has been awarded five "Texas Optimization Program Recognition Award's" for their excellence in treating water.

Test Performed on Treated Water

The EPA requires treated water to be tested for 193 chemicals. The Texas Department of Health and LCRA performs the tests. Of the 193 tests performed there were no results equal to or greater than the Maximum Contaminant Level Goal (MCLG) or Maximum Contaminate Level (MCL).

The treated water produced by Brown County Water Improvement District No. 1 is in compliance with the National Primary Drinking Water Regulations (NPDWR) and exceeds all requirements in the "DRINKING WATER STANDARDS GOVERNING DRINKING WATER QUALITY AND REPORTING REQUIREMENTS" 30 TAC 290.101-290.122 effective under Texas Water Code 5.103.

The water treatment plant uses conventional treatment processes including alum/polymers for water clarification and chlorine/ammonia for disinfection. The treatment plant also adds fluoride.
